The Tankersley Clinic: Memphis Dietitian

Allergy: Food Allergy

    The Tankersley Clinic: Memphis Dietitian

    General Dietetics

    • At The Tankersley Clinic, our dietitian provides the full scope of nutritional care: healthy eating, overweight/obesity, sports performance nutrition, family sessions and guided grocery shopping.
    • Our dietitian has clinical experience helping patients manage diabetes, infectious diseases, digestive disorders,  constipation, overweight/obesity and other chronic illnesses.  She is passionate about good nutrition and is committed to serving the Memphis and Mid-South community with her dietetics expertise!
    • The Tankersley Clinic Dietetics follows the best science and practices. We do not recommend quirky fads, gimmicks or run unnecessary, unproven labs like food IgG testing, micronutrient testing, cardiometabolic testing, telomere testing or mediator release food sensitivity testing that all give high false positive rates or misleading results resulting in unwarranted recommendations for food avoidance.  The value of a test is that it allows you to accurately predict what will happen and it indicates a course of action. These tests do not satisfy either one of those criteria. We follow the science and put our patients first!
    • Our dietitian does not care for patients 1) < 18 years, 2) with eating disorders, 3) with kidney disease (unless it is mild), and 4) on tube feeding.

Allergy: Food Allergy and Adverse Food Reactions/Intolerances

    • At The Tankersley Clinic, we provide food allergy expertise! We are a food allergy center of excellence and take food allergy seriously enough to have a dietitian on staff.  We are the only allergy practice in the Mid-South to have our own dietitian! Our dietitian uses her expertise to help food-allergic individuals avoid food allergens and maintain a healthy balanced diet.  She also works one-on-one with those patients with adverse food reactions/intolerances like gluten-sensitivity, celiac disease, lactose intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome to maximize their nutritional needs!
    • Partnering with Dr. Tankersley, our board-certified Allergist, our dietitian provides expert consultation to patients and families with food allergies in order to maximize nutrition and minimize risk!

    Respiratory

    • At The Tankersley Clinic, you can breathe easy with expert advice about healthy food!
    • The obesity epidemic is a global problem, which is set to increase over time. However, the effects of obesity on the respiratory system are often underappreciated.
    • Obesity plays a key role in the development of obstructive sleep apnea and obesity hypoventilation syndrome.
    • Asthma is more common and often harder to treat in the obese population.
    • Obesity and malnutrition also have compounding effects on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

    Skin Care

    • At The Tankersley  Clinic, we are all about healthy food & healthy skin!
    • One-third of patients with severe atopic dermatitis have a food trigger to their eczema.
    • Dermatitis herpetiformis bumps and blisters resemble herpes lesions, hence the name “herpetiformis,” but are NOT caused by the herpes virus. They are caused by gluten ingestion.
    • Pediatric patients with psoriasis are at greater risk of developing obesity.
    • Being overweight (obesity) may cause skin problems due to several factors. Changes in hormones may cause acanthosis nigricans, which are darkened, velvety areas of the neck and body folds, while stretching of the skin may result in stretch marks (striae). Increased strain on the leg veins may cause fluid retention, leg swelling, rupture of superficial capillaries (capillaritis), varicose veins, dermatitis, and even ulcers. Retained moisture in body folds encourages the growth of bacteria and fungi, leading to skin rashes and potential breakdown and a variety of infections, such as intertrigo. Finally, the foot may develop corns and calluses due to the increased weight. Many of these skin problems will resolve with a healthy diet and subsequent weight loss.

    Insurance and Pricing

    • The Tankersley Clinic requires payment in full in order to schedule the new patient appointment. After the appointment, we can supply you, upon request, with an itemized statement that you may then use if you decide to seek reimbursement from your insurance by self-filing.  Payment for follow-up appointments scheduled by the dietitian will be collected prior to the follow-up appointment.
    • A new consultation with our dietitian is $150 (60 min) and a follow-up appointment with our dietitian is $60 (30 min).  We also offer a one-year consultation package that includes a new patient visit and four follow-up visits at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months for $350 (a $40 savings off our standard rate for this level of care). One-year packages must be purchased at the new patient visit and all five visits must be used within 15 months of the date of purchase.
    • There is a $150 no-show fee for new appointments and $60 for follow-up appointments that are cancelled less than 24 hours prior to the appointment.  There is a $25 transaction fee for appointments that cancelled >24 hours before the appointment and not rescheduled.
    • Should your insurance cover nutrition services, it is your responsibility to file a claim. The Tankersley Clinic does not file insurance claims for nutrition visits. Nutrition consultation with a dietitian is typically not fully covered by insurance plans. At times, some carriers may reimburse a percentage of the visit. We recommend you contact your insurance company before your appointment to see what level of coverage you may receive as a part of your plan.
    • Did you know that many health insurance companies cover nutritional counseling? This is often the case EVEN if you don’t have an actual diagnosis BUT still want to come in for nutrition counseling for prevention of a disease. Why not check to see if your insurance policy will cover the visits? Start by calling the 800 number on the back of your insurance card and ask to speak with a representative.
    • Medicare only covers the visit if you have diabetes or renal disease.
    • Our dietitian is currently considered to be out-of-network with all insurance carriers
    • Questions to ask your insurance carrier: (1)  Do I have nutritional counseling coverage on my insurance plan?  If the insurance company asks for a CPT code please provide them with the following codes 97802 & 97803. (2)  Will my diagnosis be covered?  If the representative asks for a diagnosis code – please tell them the visit is coded the ICD 10 code: Z71.3. (3)  How many visits do I have per calendar year?  Your carrier will let you know how many visits they are willing to cover. Depending on the carrier the number of visits vary from 0 to unlimited depending on medical need.
