The Tankersley Clinic: Dietitics

Rikki K Minkler, RDN, LDN

  • At The Tankersley Clinic, we provide food allergy expertise! We are a food allergy center of excellence and take food allergy seriously enough to have a dietitian on staff.
  • Partnering with Dr. Tankersley, our board-certified Allergist, our dietitian provides expert consultation to patients and families with food allergies in order to maximize nutrition and minimize risk!

  • At The Tankersley Clinic, you can breath easy with expert advice!
  • The obesity epidemic is a global problem, which is set to increase over time. However, the effects of obesity on the respiratory system are often underappreciated.
  • Obesity plays a key role in the development of obstructive sleep apnea and obesity hypoventilation syndrome.
  • Asthma is more common and often harder to treat in the obese population.
  • Obesity also has compounding effects on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Skin Care

  • At The Tankersley  Clinic, we are all about healthy food & healthy skin!
  • One-third of patients with severe atopic dermatitis have a food trigger to their eczema.
  • Dermatitis herpetiformis bumps and blisters resemble herpes lesions, hence the name “herpetiformis,” but are NOT caused by the herpes virus. They are caused by gluten ingestion.
  • Pediatric patients with psoriasis are at greater risk of developing obesity.
  • Being overweight (obesity) may cause skin problems due to several factors. Changes in hormones may cause acanthosis nigricans, which are darkened, velvety areas of the neck and body folds, while stretching of the skin may result in stretch marks (striae). Increased strain on the leg veins may cause fluid retention, leg swelling, rupture of superficial capillaries (capillaritis), varicose veins, dermatitis, and even ulcers. Retained moisture in body folds encourages the growth of bacteria and fungi, leading to skin rashes and potential breakdown and a variety of infections, such as intertrigo. Finally, the foot may develop corns and calluses due to the increased weight. Many of these skin problems will resolve with a healthy diet and subsequent weight loss.
